(1) Support the research and development of materials science and engineering technology related to Energy Storage Sodium Battery
From the development experience of foreign countries, many of the initial achievements of sodium storage battery came from the application research and development and technical breakthrough organized by the national energy department or energy user department. In January 2020, the Ministry of Education, the National Development and Reform Commission, and the National Energy Administration jointly formulated the Action Plan for The Development of Energy Storage Technology Specialty (2020-2024) (referred to as the Action Plan), aiming to accelerate the development of energy storage technology specialty by coordinating and integrating higher education resources based on the major demand of energy storage industry development. Speed up the training of “advanced, sophisticated and lacking” talents in the field of energy storage, crack common and bottleneck technologies, enhance the industry’s ability to tackle key and core technologies and independent innovation, and promote high-quality development of the energy storage industry through integrated development of industry and education. The Action Plan will inject strong impetus into the development of energy storage industry. To improve the technical maturity of sodium storage batteries with independent intellectual property rights in China, attention should also be paid to the research and development of relevant basic materials. More importantly, from the strategic level, high-quality enterprises and research institutes with r&d foundation should be organized to carry out engineering technology research and provide relevant project support. Focus on solving the “bottleneck” problem in sodium storage battery and promoting the upgrading of sodium storage battery based on foreign experience, in order to realize the mature development of China’s sodium storage battery technology system in a short period of time
(2) Promote the agglomeration and development of upstream and downstream industries related to energy storage sodium batteries
Industrial scale is a key factor in the development of energy storage sodium batteries. The formation of a certain amount of industrial clusters is essential to reduce the manufacturing cost of energy storage sodium batteries and improve the market competitiveness of energy storage sodium batteries. In the middle and late stages of improving the technological maturity of energy storage sodium batteries, the accumulation and development of the upstream and downstream industries related to energy storage sodium batteries is a key part of the real application of energy storage sodium batteries. Guide social capital, lay out the industrial chain around the technological innovation chain, strengthen the integration of technology, capital and industry, and improve resource utilization efficiency through industrial chain cooperation and coordination, and enhance the market competitiveness of energy storage sodium batteries. The planning and implementation of large-scale energy storage sodium battery demonstration projects is an opportunity to promote the development of related upstream and downstream industries, and it is expected that the development of my country’s energy storage sodium batteries will enter the fast track of a virtuous circle.
(3) Establish and improve relevant standards for energy storage sodium batteries and promote the construction of high-temperature sodium battery evaluation platforms
Since 2018, frequent fire accidents at home and abroad have poured cold water on the starting energy storage industry and made the safety of energy storage the focus of public opinion. Some industry experts believe that the energy storage accident is not a simple technical problem, but a standard problem. Standards are the summary of technological development, and they also need to be guided by policies and regulations from top to bottom. The National Energy Administration, in conjunction with other competent authorities, has issued many documents to promote the standardization of energy storage and require the establishment of a more systematic energy storage standard system. As a new type of energy storage technology, sodium energy storage batteries are particularly problematic in the absence of relevant standards. There is an urgent need to establish and improve relevant testing and evaluation standards. If my country introduces relevant industry standards for energy storage sodium batteries, or even national standards, it is believed that it will be able to promote the commercial development of energy storage sodium batteries to a large extent. Based on relevant standards, certification bodies can promote the construction of high-temperature sodium battery evaluation platforms, so as to urge the standardization and standardization of the development of energy storage sodium batteries from a policy perspective, and lay a solid foundation for their large-scale application and smooth integration with the application market.
